Hyvä Alexander Stubb, me suomalaiset olemme Sinusta ylpeitä. Esiinnyt tyylikkäästi ja diplomaattisesti maailmalla - ja saat tuloksia aikaan. Olen onnellinen siitä, että voit olla juuri nyt Georgiassa, vaikka tilanne on vakava. Georgia on kaunis, ainutlaatuinen vanha kulttuuri, joka otti vastaan kristinuskon jo sen ensimmäisinä vuosisatoina ja sen kulttuuri puolestaan kumpuaa suoraan antiikista, kuten varmasti itse tiedätkin. Silti se on säilynyt, koska se on ylpeä omasta identiteetistään. Ja siitä on aihettakin olla ylpeä! Toivottavasti Georgia saa kasvaa, kukoistaa ja elää rauhassa. Deputy Chief of Russian Armed Forces Headquarters Anatoli Nogovitsin's claim sounds alarming. According to Mr Nogovitsin Georgia had told the OSCE about its intentions to attack South Ossetia but according to the claim the OSCE had not warned the peacekeeping forces in the area about the Georgian military preparations.

There are rumours and claims in excess in this crisis, but it might be constructive to find the truth and publish it in this special case, and as soos as possible.

Related to earlier discussions about "in which language to blog with". While this is obviously an international matter that draws wide interest internationally you could consider tossing in a sentence or two in Finnish in the beginning or in the end of an English post. .. Similarly you could consider tossing an English sentence or two in some of your Finnish posts. E.g. Jukka Kemppinen (kemppinen.blogspot.com) does this every now and then and it works well in my opinion.

Another language related comment to all interested: Google added Finnish to their translation service just recently. It's far from perfect, barely mediocre. But usually gives an idea of the text pretty well. -- Text below is an example.

Purettu Tbilisi kanssa kaksi ensimmäistä sotilaskomitea seuraa. Tavoitteenamme on saada toiminta käyntiin. Kaikki ETYJ: n jäseniä ovat olleet hyvin anteliaita niiden pantit. Paljon APCs (panssaroidut ajoneuvot) ja valvontalaitteiden valmisteilla.

Meidän ohjelma on hieman up in the air, mutta aiomme aloittaa tiedotustilaisuuden klo ETYJ. Aion sitten puhua Chief Military Observer, Stephen Young. Aiomme myös käydä pakolainen keskustasta ja mahdollisesti Gori. Will Päivitämme blog koska asiat kehittyvät.

Matkalla pois Gorista. Matkalla Goriin kuljimme neljän Venäjän sotilaallinen tarkistaa pistettä kautta. Gorissa tapasimme Punaisen Ristin, Maailman elintarvikeohjelman ja Gorin kuvernöörin. Saimme myös yllätysvieraililjaksi kenraalimajuri Borisovin, joka on 76. maihinlaskudivisioonan komentaja.

Yksi hyvä uutinen ja kaksi kappaletta huonoja uutisia. Hyvät uutiset ensin: humanitaarinen apu menee läpi esteettä, vain pienin viivästyksin. Punainen Risti oli ollut Tshinvalissa tänään.

Huonot uutiset 1: maanteillä ja kaupungissa on hyvin vähän näyttöä joukkojen vetämisestä. En voi arvioida, mitä tapahtuu marginaaleissa.

Huonot uutiset 2: siviilien suojelu on horjuvaa. Näimme Venäjän Hätäministeriön joukkojen tuovan georgialaisia Etelä-Ossetian kylistä. Nämä olivat vanhoja ihmisiä Heitin kylästä. Ne tehdään kaikki heidän omaisuutensa. He olivat itku. Sodan kasvot ovat julmat, verisen (/pirun) julmat.

Olikohan hyokkayksessa myos takana presidentinvaalit USA:ssa
ja oudosti Herr Stubb nousi myos Suomessa presidenttiehdokkaaksi.

Our foreign minister A. Stubb have got see, how "hospitable" Russian Major General can be, when minister Stubb came to Gori.

This Major General said, that he didn't know him, even though Alexander Stubb is well-known all over the world today, because he is now chairman of The OSCE .

I wonder at this, that Major General Borisov don't be conscious of this, but Terhi Hakala head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia had to explain many times to Major General, who our foreign minister is.

Incomprehensible situation! But i understand, that the political situation is yet up in the air and that's why Major General was so nervous.

Dear Alex, it might be a benefit, if you'd be able to elaborate your statement of the ceasefire being frail, as far as these matters can be published without having a negative effect to the matter itself.

Anyways, take care of yourself. I feel great respect also for the people of the OSCE, Red Cross and others working in the area in order to help the suffering people and in order to manage the ceasefire to function as well as possible in a conflict where single mistakes might prove to be far too important later on.

Dear Mr. Chairman,
I very much appreciate the job you do for Georgia, for Europe, for the people. You are informed very well on the situation and You give direct information on Your job to the public. You have been warning very early, but it seems there was no chance to prevent the war. That is a well planned strategic operation after Georgia has been pushed into a corner.
My wife with the children has been visiting her parents since mid of July. They live in a village about 25 km southwest of Zkhinvali. She told that time by phone that the villages of the area are permanently shot during the weeks before 7.August 2008. And if talking about Russian peacekeepers what have they done during that time? It seems that they are part of the conflict as they did nothing to end the attack of Georgian populated areas. The only solution can be an international peacekeeping force accompanied by diplomatic negotiations to resolve the problem of separatist areas. A so called safety zone intended by Russia to be erected on Georgian side will be as helpful as the peacekeepers: Instead of safety to the region it will only create some additional 10 thousands refugees. My parents in law will be among them. Already 1992 during the first battle of the separatists, people in Georgia have lost everything except of one. They would not loose their neighbour be it an Ossetian. Even in South Ossetia up to now lived some Georgians. The people You have told about and met in Gori today coming crying from Zkhinvali were some of the last Georgians from Zkhinvali. Nobody possibly touch them over there. It has been just the administration who was "cleaning" the area ethnically. How can this be a begin of a new independent country? Or better a part of Russia? It seems we start to understand the intension: South Ossetia is not enough, want to take some Georgia as well and name it Safety Zone. I am very much concerned about the situation in Georgia as people now after a decade for the second time loose everything with many victims in the country. There is no evidence what Russian troops and the Kosacks/ Ossetian troopers do in the occupied villages and towns. Please do everything You can to end that bad game in the sense of the ceasefire- agreement without any safety zones.

Maybe there should be a time for constructive thinking in order to settle the current crisis in a peaceful manner. As Russians are telling that their withdrawal will take 10 days more (which sounds much more realistic than today, even though too soon anyway, compared to other wars and conflicts during the last 20 years in and nearby Europe), it might be the time to work for a UN Resolution agreering on the first peacekeeping groups helping the OSCE team and replacing the Russian troops. The point is that it is useless to claim about the sovereignty of Abkhazian and South Ossetian areas by Georgia while they are at the moment de facto controlled by the Russian troops.

It would be fruitful to start negotiating rightaway about the next step without trying to master the solution of the crisis at once. Conflict resolving takes a long time, but that is no excuse to start working for an acceptable result rightaway.

The bottomline is that there is a need for an international peacekeeping force before Russian military will withdraw. They will not leave a vacuum, since that might encourage the suffered parties to start a long standing war against each other, that is a platform for a proxy war.

Dear Alex, thank you for your excellent speech in Tbilisi after your meeting with the Georgian minister of foreign affairs Eka Tkeshelashvili and the Georgian minister for reintegration isssues Temur Iakobashvili. I'm especially satisfied with the point number three in your speech where you highlighted some of the major structural matters concerning how to "arrange the future of stabilization of the region".

We should not fall for blaming the parties of the conflict or trying to divide the conflicting parties to good guys and bad ones, but we must keep the concentration on building up a structure and system through which the international community including also Georgia proper, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Russia, is able to reform the conflict zone to a peaceful and prosperous region for the benefit of all the people living there now and in the future, and with the respect of human rights. This will take a long time and there will be many actrts that might try to ruin the efforts for their own short-term benefits. Thus, it is important to think thoroughly the composition of the key group preparing the set up. But there is not too much time, since in the UN thinks seem to get nowhere. We need positive steps as often as possible, even though they need not to be huge ones.

SALAINEN AGENTTI ALEXANDER STUBB - AIKAMME SANKARI

Suomen ulkosuhteiden kehittäminen ei kiinnosta Alexander Stubbia, joka seikkailee mieluummin Gruusian vuoristoissa nostamassa ETYJ:n profiilia ja edistämässä alkanutta presidentin kunigastietään.

Gruusiaan sodan jälkeen peräti kaksi kertaa ehtinyt Stubb on ilmeisesti kokonaan unohtanut olevansa Suomen ulkoministeri.

Valtioneuvoston jäsenenä Stubbin pitäisi palvella Suomen kansaa kehittämällä ja ylläpitämällä suhteitamme muihin valtioihin. Näin suursodan kynnyksellä Venäjä on jo aloittanut maatamme vastaan talouspakotteet mm. puutullien muodossa. Se on taloudellista sodankäyntiä, joka on selvästi vastaus joihinkin Suomen aiempiin toimiin, kuten Karjalan palautushankkeisiin ja epäiltyyn Nato-lähentymiseen. Venäjällä muistetaan erittäin hyvin Riitta Uosukaisen toivomus Karjalan palauttamisesta tyhjänä. Asia on noussut uudelleen venäläisten mieliin Stubbin myötä.

Stubbin hektisissä meppipäiväkirjoissa ei ole sanaakaan Venäjästä, joka ei ole koskaan ollut hänen asialistallaan. Siksi Suomen suhteet Venäjään eivät kehity, vaan taantuvat. Se ei ole ihme, sillä ulkoministerimme seikkailee Kaukasian vuoristoissa kuin eräänlainen James Bond, aikamme sankari.

Stubbin seikkailuista ei puuttunut jännitystä, kun venäläinen kenraali otti Gruusian sodan raunioissa harhaileen Stubbin kiinni tv-kameroiden todistaessa tapahtumaa. Stubb asetti itsensä generalissimukseksi ja esitteli itsensä "Sergei Lavrovin kollegana", johon kenraali hymähti "vai että kollega" ja kuulusteli Stubbin sukunimeä. Useampikin Venäjän venäläinen on jo ilmaissut minulle ihmetyksensä siitä, miksi Suomen ulkoministeri riehuu maailmalla Gruusian puolesta Venäjää vastaan. On turha selittää heille, ettei asia ihan niin ole. Kymmenien miljoonien tv-katsojien edessä Stubb on Gruusian sotarikollisten agentti. Stubb ei tiedä tätä itse - vielä.

Jokin aika sitten venäläinen ystäväni kirjoitti minulle hätääntyneen kysymyksen: "Hei Johan! Onko Alexander Srubb ollut teillä kauan ministerin virassa? Miten hän suhtautuu Venäjään? Hän ei ilmeisesti tiedä Venäjästä mitään eikä osaa venäjän kieltä? Vai olenko erehtynyt? Hänhhän on nyt rauhanturvaajana Gruusian ja Venäjän välillä."

Kiinnostuneille tiedoksi, että minä en vastannut kysymyksiin. Venäläisen toimittajan pitäisi tietää, että yksikään suomalainen poliitikko ei tiedä Venäjästä mitään. He ovat sen suhteen tyhmempiä kuin pahimmissa painajaisissakaan aavistavat.

Ystäväni meili oli paljastava sen suhteen, miten hätääntyneesti tavalliset venäläiset suhtautuvat Stubbiin. Venäjän ja Gruusian väliin on tullut suomalainen, joka yrittää kyykyttää kenraaleita. Venäjällä Suomi samaistetaan aiheettomasti ennen kaikkea Viroon, sen rasistiseen apartheid-politiikkaan ja erilaisiin Venäjä-vastaisiin aloitteisiin.

Mahtaako Stubb itse ymmärtää tilannetta? Mitä mieltä hän on siitä?

Ehkä Stubb on viemässä Suomea mukaan vaaralliseen Gruusia-Ukraina-Viro -akseliin. Viro on Gruusian sodan eräs arkkitehti. Mart Laar on presidentti Ilveksen Gruusia-neuvonantaja. Laar oli Saakashvilin seurassa sodan syttyessä. Äskettäin Pietarista karkotettiin virolainen vakooja, mikä ei kerro Venäjän ja Viron lähitulevaisuudesta hyvää.

When the popularity of reputation grows; the discordant notes will come too.. But the Good bell can be heard further away. When a member from another party is talking; it can be that the voice of Envy is talking. "They want the have a person like You, but they don't have" and that's why they try "to shoot You down with the weapon of words". They just want to aim the goals of their very own. The sound of these criticizes is negative, the things are not said in "good and friendly spirit," It is like the dogs have to bark. So need to keep in mind in those days that the "dogs are only at their work of their own" :-)

Vaikka konflikti ei ole ollenkaan ohi, niin toivotaan että Venäjä vetää loputkin sotilaat pois Georgiasta. Hienoa, että Eurooppa oli yksinmielinen siitä että hyökkäys itsenäisen valtion alueelle ei ole missään tapauksessa hyväksyttävää.

Hmm. Venäjän "rauhanturvaajat" Plotissa, valvovat sumeilematta Geor
gian infraa. Georgiassa öljyputki vie öljyä länteen. Suunitteilla oli toinenkin putki. Tämänkö vuoksi Venäjä kiinnostunut?

Varoitus ehkä Suomelle. Suomen aluerajojen sisäpuolelta suunitteilla "jättikaasuputki" länsi-euroopan markkinoille Viipurin kautta.

Mitenköjän "vanja" aikoo turvata putken "rauhan" terroristihyökkäysten varalta. Ettei vaan tule Suomelle käymään niinkuin Georgiassa??

Viikonlopun uutistarjonnassa on ollut kiinnostavia kohtia niin Beijingin olympialaisten keihäsfinaalin kuin loppujuhlallisuuksien kuin – tietenkin – Obaman varapresidenttikandidaatin julkistamisen osaltakin. Kohta nähdään kuka McCainin taistelupariksi tulee – ja sitten alkaakin kamppailun uusi mielenkiintoinen vaihe.

Georgia ja ennen kaikkea Venäjän lähiaikojen toimet ovat sitten asia joita seurataan silmä kovana ja sydän kallellaan joka puolella Euroopassa. Ukrainassa ja Baltiassa varmasti vielä muita alueita tiukemmin. I guess, that the Russian knows this quite well, but it means nothing to Moskow. The Russian military stay at South-Ossetia probably still in the future. I'm thinking, that's realism.

In any case, most of the Russians - even young people - are pleased, that Russia has now shown the strength in Georgia, as a number of news sources have told.

You will appreciate how keen and quick the Fox News interviewer is to move on to an advertising in order to interrupt and silence them and, hence, avoid that what could possibly be the truth be told. After the adverstising, the interviewer give them only 30 seconds to wrap up their story.

The fact that the Russians might not, in that specific case, be aggressor is altogether and systematically dismissed in our mainstream media. Why? You know the truth, Mr. Stubb, but you will not tell it for there is too much oil over there in Georgia that our good American friends want. And they want it now! Are they using you among many others to achieve their goal: more oil by bleeding more women and men, young and old, and more children. As if Iraq was and is still not enough.

There is a rather thorough explanation about how the Georgian crisis should be understood according to the rules of International law in an article of Spiegel "Russland durfte Südossetien zu Hilfe eilen". According to Daniel-Erasmus Khan (Professor of International law in Universität der Bundeswehr München) Georgia seems to have violated against International law by trying to overtake South Ossetia by force, and the initial response of Russia against Georgian troops was not a violation against international law.

However, Russian leaders claimed that they went to Georgia in order to protect Russian citizens. Mr Khan explains also why Russian leaders did not want to explain more thoroughly the rules of International law applying in this case. According to Mr Khan this was due to internal politics and North Ossetia.

I am not Finnish and perhaps not entitled to comment but here goes... I am reading White Death and the similarities between the actions of Russia in 1939 and 2008 are frightening. The Russia comment on "doing no harm, only freeing an oppressed people" truly resonanted. If anyone should be involved in the resolution of the Georgia issue it should be a Finn.

I am afraid many Finns do not have that feeling of 1939 and 2008.
In the 1970s a kind of brainwashing started in Finnish public life. Moscow is the safe mother of Finland. Many Finns have forgotten the horrors of Russia and Soviet communism and think others should do the same and just please Finland's Eastern neighbour.

Your statement of brainwashing is partially true concerning the Finnish state-owned part of the media (YLE) approximately between 1960-85, but it was not specifically successful due to the power of president Kekkonen. A great deal of Finns did not agree with the "Kekkonen media", since everybody knew that the news were biased. We simply made the best of the situation as it was.

We also know that there are such countries as Germany, Poland and Belarus inbetween the Netherlands and Russia, but that is not the case with us. With our long border with Russia, one of the so called great powers of today, we still prefer to have a good relationship with Russia.

In fact, the issue is not about party politics, idealism, capitalism, market power or communism, but about whether the EU is able to act as a unified great power in the future with other creat powers including the US, Russia, China, India and Brazil. Nato showed is incapability in the Georgia crisi both as a miliyary union and as an organisation to manage crisis. The point is therefore not Russia, but how we as Europeans are able to maintain our standard of living in the future and at the same time secure the future of the mankind without blowing this place into peaces by excuses of religious, national or opportunistic reasons. De facto, we as a whole, that is as Europeans, are loosing unless we are able to get the so called barbarians with us (the US, China and India) to fight together against the climate change.

Naturally, we have a possibility to kill each other before the climate change takes care of us, for example by overestimating the capability of the West to infiltrate its idea of free market economy and free democracy in Asia.

Dear Jan, take a trip to Rotterdam and check where all the containers are coming from. I quess that a great deal of them are from China, which should be our main concern in good and in bad.

Nevertheless, I want to thank you of your fresh opinions, even though they might not always present the common understanding of the current issues according to Finns.

My father and his family were deported from Eastern Poland to the Vologda region in June 1940, my grandmother died in A Soviet work camp of exhaustion in January 1941 and my grandfather died in Soviet Kazachstan just before they could get evacuated to Iran in 1942. My father was in the Polish forces which liberated Italy in 1944-1945 and got wounded in the battle of Monte Cassino.

And Finland elects somebody like Tarja Halonen to be president and Erkki Tuomioja as its foreign minister. Such people should be excluded from any political office in Finland.

Finland, the Baltic countries and Poland are all victims of the Soviet Union. Only Finland has not shown much solidarity with other victims of the Soviet Union as they transformed themselves to the Trojan Horse of the Soviet Union/Moscow/Russia.
