Ikävä kyllä näyttää siltä Venäjällä ei ole aikomustakaan vetäytyä Georgiasta. Myös Terhi Hakala sanoi äsken että 'Venäjä ei ole vetäytynyt lainkaan' eli näin ollen Venäjä on jo rikkonut sopimusta. Toistaiseksi eurooppalainen 'rauhanomaisiin ratkaisuihin pyrkivä diplomaattia' on osoittanut varsin tehottomaksi ja riittämättömäksi Venäjän valheiden ja sotakoneiston edessä.

Russian soldiers held blindfolded Georgian servicemen at gunpoint and commandeered US Humvees in a dramatic sequence of events in the key Black Sea port of Poti. In Poti, on the Black Sea, Russian forces blocked access to the naval and commercial ports this morning and towed the missile boat Dioskuria, one of the navy's most sophisticated vessels, out of sight of observers. A loud explosion was heard minutes later.
Several hours later, an Associated Press photographer saw Russian trucks and armored personnel carriers leaving the port with about 20 blindfolded and handcuffed men riding on them. Port spokesman Eduard Mashevoriani said the men were Georgian soldiers.

Pystyykö nato ja venäjä vielä jatkamaan yhteistyötä?

A big question in the future is, how long the Russian military want stay at South-Ossetia and as well in Abhasia?

We know that The President Eduard Kokoity of South-Ossetia would ask Moscow to station a military base there and rejected the presence of international observers.

Be that as it may, after this war the world is change irrevocably. The line between the East and the West is indestructible and it still grow deeper I think.

Thank You for serving to us the facts; the readers can be "so near the big tray" almost every day! The Estonian situation is also interesting, because they do prepare themselves to receive the refugees from Georgia.

How will Finnish organizations react for the needs of refugees at Estonia? And how will Russia react to Estonia/Finland after that? There is so much gunpowder in the atmosphere that "every move needs to clear up" beforehand and carefully.

But You CAN that work, wish to You all the resources needed!

Jaksamista edelleen toivoen Georgian kriisissä.

Kaikkein parhaat eväät saa toiminnalleen, kun noudattaa objektiivisen totuuden ehtoja ja jättää hömpät omaan arvoonsa. On hyvä että oman ulkoministeriegon ylläpito ei saa jalansijaa toiminnassasi vaan kurinalainen pysyminen varsinaisissa asioissa. Tämä on uutta Suomen politiikassa.

Tällä tavalla voidaan edetä kärsivällisesti myös varsinaisissa neuvotteluissa. Kyseessä on aina takana sekä varsinaiset ongelmat että siihen liittyvä oman edun peli. Kun pyritään saamaan itse parhaat tulokset, tapahtumat jäävät pattitilanteeseen, mutta siitä ei kannata lannistua, vaan pureutua siihen mistä varsinaisesti kiikastaa. Tämä voi viedä aikaa, mutta mahdollisessa pitkässä juoksussa totuus kuitenkin on vahvin ase ja voittaa lopulta aina. Näennäispeli ei kanna pitkälle.

Hyvin on kriisin selvittäminen alkanut. Tässä on jotain jota ei ole ennen nähty maailmanpolitiikassa. Esimerkiksi venäläiset sotilaat ovat saaneet vapaasti kommentoida mediassa olemistaan kriisialueella. Maailma tulee pienemmäski ja yhteisen vastuun merkitys nousee koko ajan.

Muista kaima, että tuo täti Rice on melkein jo menettänyt siipensä.
Ja mielenstäni professori Jukka Kemppinen osuu harvinaisen oikeaan keskiviikon blogissaan kun hän toteaa:

"Arvioin että sota jatkuu yhdeksän vuotta. Luulen että amerikkalaiset ovat soikeita onnesta. Kansainvälistä konfliktia he toivoivat saadakseen suistuneen taloutensa kuntoon, eikä heidän tarvinnut edes aiheuttaa sitä itse!"

Mutta hyvin olet pärnännyt vaikeassa tehtävässäsi, siitä onnitteluni. Joskin lehdistön vaatina presidentin kannanotto olisi pilannut sinunkin toimintamahdollisuutesi. Sellaisat ei tullut, viisaasti TP toimi, ja olet saattaut toimia rauhan rakentajana.

Military monitors deployment is a long-expected positive development of the situation and coming to terms with such obstinate parties is a praiseworthy diplomatic move. But anyway no international effort will bring to life people whichever nationality they were - South Osetian, Georgian or Russian. And it is sad to notice that while some European leaders as well as American lay stress on sovereignty violation, it is Russian leaders who emotionally emphasize the death rate.

Great job mr. Stubb for now. Hopefully you don't need another holidays after the conflict is over if it gets over soon.
I guess your fingerprint is seen already here when you have done job to get military monitors to the area. Which is a good thing to get knowledge what really happens there.
So good to see what one man can do in the conflict where both the States and Russian fed has interests in away or another.

Forty years ago, in August 1968, tanks invaded the Czechoslovakian capital Prague.

The ideology today is different - but there are tanks again in a small country's territory. This time they are also there to "help a neighbour."

Yesterday was a day of mourning, not for today, but for the future. The US missile shield deal between the US and Poland is not only a dangerous play to start a new arms race but also a factual obstacle as we are trying to intensify cooperation between Russia and the EU in order to avoid future conflicts in the European theatre. The US has succeeded in dividing the EU States, no more or less.

The message is clear: the US aims to stay as the only superpower and the US has shown its power to circumvent Nato's decision procedure, based on unaminity and thereby slowness, by making a deal with a sole member of the organization.

The second message is also clear: whether you agree with the US or you are walked over.

The third message is maybe something through which we might better understand the reasoning of Bush Administration: we (the Americans) are the leading and most successful power in the world and at the same time we are the only superpower. Therefore if you agree with us, it is for your benefit, and that is actually your only choice in the "civilized western hemisphere".

Federal Reserve might feel its position endangered. Thus, it is of utmost importance to include in the peace negotiations of the Georgian war also China, the Gulf States and India in order to proceed peacefully in the control of the development of the global economy and power. It is not a question of religion or culture, but rather an understanding of the role of new and factually major players in the global playground and the question of understanding and accepting the future role of these "new" players, rather than fighting against the phenomenon. Through globalization we have invited new players to our game and by that new rules will apply, whether we like it or not.

Finland is still the same Soviet/Russian marionette. Do Finns never learn but still embrace Russia/Soviet Union ?

Russia has informed Norway that it plans to suspend all military ties with Nato. I think,
it may well be true, because it is quite clear, that The Russian Military don't pull its troops back to pre-conflict positions in Georgia, though Nato urged Moscow to withdraw its forces.

It is quite sure, that every single an incautious statement and action between Moscow and Nato aggravate the political situation. We have hear that kind of statements from Moskow, that they are even prepared make an attack to Poland.

Moskow is show now to The West, that The Russian Military are ready go to very far, when they defend citizen outside the Russian Federation.

And what's going on next in Ukraine?

Kaivauduin tuohon Kaukasuksen tilanteeseen syvemmin ja ymmärsin kuinka vanhasta konfliktista tässä oikeastaan on kysymys. Nyt parannellaan pahimmillaan 1800-luvulta peräisin olevia haavoja, joskin väärin lääkkein. Siellä on kestetty neuvostoaika ja moni muita aikoja, jotka ovat jättäneet jälkeensä surua, murhetta, katkeruutta ja vihaa.
Ei ole helppo tehtävä liennyttää näitä jännitteitä ja saada aikaan jotakin kestävää ja parantavaa. Julistusten sijasta tarvitaan myös tekoja, ja olenkin ilolla seurannut toimiasi asian suhteen.
Nykyinen instant- media ja uutisointi myös vääristää asioita ja tiedonsaantia. On hyvä, että blogistasi pystyy lukemaan mitä siellä oikeasti tapahtui.

On the practicalities of crisis management:

Mr. Stubb recently regretted in an interview with a Finnish newspaper that the Finnish government does not have any airplanes available for the kind of crisis management efforts seen in the recent weeks.

I would think this is a great opportunity to co-operate on the EU level.
Let's stop the Strasbourg traveling circus, and use the 200 M€ and 20 000 tons of CO2 saved annually to support a small fleet of 'flying offices' for such purposes. They could alternatively also be used for med-evac, humanitarian aid etc. for crisis in remote regions. We could even base the fleet in S:bourg, if (when) that's an issue for the French, it being quite well located geographically for such a purpose.

If we start the process now, the fleet should be ready when the Lisbon treaty has been fully ratified, and Mr. Stubb would be able to utilize the planes in his future role as the High Representative of Foreign Policy for the EU :)
