- The EU supports efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Gaza
The EU foreign ministers gave their strong support for the achievement of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza between Hamas and Israel when they met in Brussels on Monday, 26 January. According to Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, it is now most important to get humanitarian aid through as quickly as possible, support the ceasefire, reopen the Gaza border crossings and to prevent the smuggling of arms and ammunition to Gaza.

In the opinion of Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb, the Government?s Security and Defence Policy Report now released gives comprehensive consideration to the changes in the world situation that have occurred since the previous Government report of 2004. The new report also takes a clear stand in support of multilateral cooperation. ?We want a strong UN, a strong EU, a strong NATO, a strong World Bank, a strong IMF and a strong OSCE,? the foreign minister said.

The EU General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) will meet in Brussels on Monday 26, January. The main theme of the meeting will be the Middle East peace process. Other themes will include energy security and relations between the EU and Russia and the EU and Ukraine. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Stubb, will represent Finland at the meeting.

Today 21 January, Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb will travel to Brussels, where he and his colleagues from other EU countries will meet Foreign Minister of Israel Tzipi Livni over dinner. In the meeting, they will discuss the situation in Gaza, ways to secure a lasting ceasefire, and delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb has appointed Pekka Haavisto, Member of Parliament, to serve as his Special Representative to African crisis areas. At a press conference held on 15 January, Minister Stubb stated that the appointment supports this year?s Finnish foreign policy emphasis on the African region.

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb met on 12 January with Secretary General Luis Fernando Andrade Falla of the Association of Caribbean States in Helsinki. The two discussed possibilities to increase and deepen relations between Finland and the Caribbean states. There are promising possibilities for cooperation with the members of the Association of Caribbean States, especially in UN policy and, for instance, in connection with climate change and reforestation projects.
